About Us

Thapar Institute Counselling Cell (TICC) was established in January 2016 as part of the Department of Student Affairs (DoSA) at TIET, with a primary focus on promoting the holistic well-being of students through comprehensive mental health counselling services, in adherence to UGC guidelines. TICC serves as a crucial support system, offering guidance and assistance to individuals in effectively navigating the complexities and stressors of student life. By providing a safe and nurturing environment, TICC empowers students to develop resilience, coping mechanisms, and overall mental well-being.

TICC plays a vital role in facilitating personal growth and academic success during the challenging phases of student life. By utilizing evidence-based counselling techniques, TICC equips individuals with the necessary tools to effectively manage stress, build emotional resilience, and foster a positive mindset. The counselling services provided by TICC extend beyond addressing immediate concerns, aiming to promote long-term mental health and self-development.

With a strong emphasis on holistic care, TICC recognizes the interconnectedness of various aspects of well-being. In addition to addressing psychological distress, TICC highlights the significance of self-care practices, stress management techniques, and effective communication skills to optimize overall mental health. By engaging individuals in personalized counselling sessions, TICC encourages self-awareness, self-reflection, and the exploration of individual strengths, values, and aspirations.

TICC's dedication to mental wellness goes beyond traditional counselling services. Through workshops, seminars, and awareness campaigns, TICC endeavours to foster a campus culture that values mental health and cultivates an inclusive and supportive community. By facilitating proactive discussions about mental well-being, TICC aims to diminish stigma, raise awareness, and promote early intervention for mental health concerns.

Operating with utmost respect for confidentiality, empathy, and respect, the highly trained and experienced counsellors at TICC provide a non-judgmental and confidential space where individuals can express their concerns and emotions. By creating a safe and supportive environment, TICC aims to build trust and establish a therapeutic alliance between counsellors and students.

Ultimately, TICC serves as an invaluable resource in fostering resilience, personal growth, and academic success, providing crucial support to individuals on their journey towards overall well-being amidst the challenges they encounter during their educational experience

FAQs
How does counselling work?
counselling can be defined as 'a professional relationship that empowers diverse individuals, families, and groups to accomplish mental health, wellness, education, and career goals' (American counselling Association , ACA).

counselling at TICC will focus on helping you deal with problems that may be coming in the way of having a fulfilling campus life at Thapar. It focuses on helping students find their inner strength and help them deal with anything that is hindering their Thapar experience. The process of talking to a trained counselor will involve exploring feelings, beliefs, thoughts, and relevant events. This process will attempt to enable you in understanding yourself.

We at TICC provide a safe, confidential, non-judgemental space for you to talk about your concerns or worries, and collaborate to uncover your strengths and ways to cope in life circumstances effectively and efficiently.
When should I reach out to TICC?
You can reach out to us anytime you're feeling anxious, having sudden change in mood, feeling low, stuck, or unable to perform to your fullest potential, or there is some sort of distress, feelings of helplessness or confusion, academic pressures, relationship troubles, adjustment issues etc.

At TICC, we assure confidentiality and encourage conversations about problems no matter how big or small they may appear to you or others.
How many appointments do I need to feel better?
Counselling works at a different pace for different individuals. So it is difficult to say how many sessions would make you feel better but one thing for sure one session will not do it all. We encourage you to come to at least four-five sessions before you decide to go even further. Together you and your counselor in a collaborative way can then set goals and the timeline for further sessions.
Would the information disclosed in the sessions be shared with others?
At TICC, we ensure that any communication between you and the centre is going to be kept confidential, with the legal exceptions of clear and serious danger to self or others, or if someone is trying to harm you.
